On My Holiday I Watched...Source Code

Source Code

Army pilot Colter Stevens wakes up on an unfamiliar train heading to Chicago, with unfamiliar people who keep talking to him like they know him. They also keep calling him Sean Fentress. This is because, to other people on this train, he does not look like himself. He is in the body of Sean. As soon as he realizes that he is not himself - the train explodes. He then wakes up inside an unfamiliar cockpit, and receives the message that the train he was on would be the place of a terroist attack. Stevens has 8 minutes to find out who did the attack, going back each time to the exact same situation; only having 8 minutes until the train explodes. Can he do it?

This movie was really, really good. It was all parallel universe-y with paradoxs and things that i will never really understand. The plot was tricky, but Jake Gyllenhaal (who played Stevens, and i love so much!) portrays it so well, making you believe everything going on is possible. It was so gripping, the plot kept moving and there were small side stories that intertwined with the main plot to give it a big picture made it so good. Only downside was that when they were explaining how they sent him back in time, they used such confusing words i didn't get it. But that's just me being a bit picky, because nothing's perfect. except jake gyllenhaal.

On My Holiday I Watched...Skyline

On My Holiday I Watched.....Skyline

When giant machines appear in the sky, radiating a bright blue light that entrances anyone who looks at it to be dragged upwards into it, it is clear that disaster is on its way. Alien ships descend onto Los Angeles, flying machines sent down to search buildings for any humans. No one can escape.

This movie was hard to write about, because it was just another 'alien invades big city a group of people are left will they or won't they survive?' films. Sure, it was good effects, but the acting kind of sucked (sorry!) and *MINISPOILER* i felt like one of the main characters died way too soon and not dramatically enough. I felt like, if you're gonna kill him then do it with some big action scene.

With all the sci-fi films out there, this wasn't that memorable among all the rest. It was good though, fun to fill time. But, apparantly, there is going to be a sequel? (I think!) And since it was left on a cliffhanger, I think i'll be up to watching the next one.

Oh yeah, and this movie gives a BIG HINT about where i went on holiday, for those who actually are trying to figure out;)

On My Holiday I Watched...Insidious

On My Holiday I Watched.....Insidious

'Its not the house that's haunted.'

I always give descriptions for the movies and books I see. But this was too hard. Because there wasn't a simple summary I could do without giving away everything.
I watched it at night, in a large pitch black room with the windows open and the air con on, and the volume high. It was me, my brother, my cousin and my cousin's girlfriend. And we were all so scared by the time it finished. The music was enough to make your skin crawl - screeching violins getting faster and faster. All four of us were huddled on a sofa, trying not to look but you know when something bad is happening you want to see? oh yeah, and its a pg 13, but we thought it was an 18. so yeah, its sososososo scary.
This movie wasn't the type with gore, and blood. It was phsycological, what might be around the corner, what might be upstairs. it gets you thinking, which was horrible. but if you like that, then it was quite good.

On My Holiday I Watched...Just Go With It

Just Go With It

Danny Macabee (Adam Sandler) has got it all figured out. He knows the perfect line to get women - 'I'm married, but my wife is a b****'. Which isn't true, because he's never been married, just uses a ring to pretend he is. Danny then meets gorgeous girl Palmer (Brooklyn Decker) and they get together. She then finds his wedding ring in his pocket the next morning, and leaves him saying that she doesn't want to ruin a marriage. But Danny lies again, saying that he's in the middle of getting a divorce. Sounds perfect, right? Until she wants to meet his wife. This is where his co-worker comes in, Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) and they get caught in a whirlwind of lies - which is pretty hard to get out of.

This was the type of movie you see once and don't go back. I was on the plane and bored, and it just kind of entertains you. It was good, a bit predictable, but the thing I didn't get, was how Jennifer Aniston was meant to play the 'not so pretty working mum' when she is obviously stunning. And Adam Sandler annoys me. Otherwise, it was fine.

On My Holiday I Read...Solar by Ian McEwen

Solar by Ian McEwen

Now, I have a confession to make. I didn't read this book. I only read the first chapter, and by then I had almost fainted from boredom. This was the first Ian McEwen book I had read, and it was so disappointing. The main character, Michael Beard is a pretentious, annoying, and whingey man who finds it shocking that his wife is having an affair, when he has been married four times before and had countless afairs. And he is a nobel prize winner.
That's as far as I got. I just couldn't stand to read it. And, I started it on a car journey so I was already bored and had nothing to do - but I couldn't bring myself to read this. It was just so disappointing.

That is why this book gets

0 STARS.

Sorry.

On My Holiday I Read...Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

Things have had a tendency to go wrong for Percy Jackson. I mean, accidentally exploding your math teacher can be a bit weird. Something strange has happened, at every school he's been to, always resulting in him getting expelled (but he blames this on his dyslexia and ADHD). But then he finds out about Camp Half-Blood, where the Greek Gods are real...and all the children there? Yep, one of their parents is a God. The other, mortal. And after only having been there a short while, Poseidon claims Percy as his son. He is then sent on a wild goose chase with his best friend Grover (who happens to be a satyr) and Annabeth, and experienced older girl who has been at camp all her life. Searching for Zeus's master bolt, the trio only have 10 days to find it...or it's an all out war of the God's.

This book is really fun to read, in the sense that I love Greek God's and all of the mythology, and this book is based around that. Percy, as a character, is a good narrator with a bit of an edge-y personality that you need when in a fight with Ares, god of war. I didn't love Grover...mainly because he was supposed to protect Percy, and it was more like Percy was protecting him. He was a bit wimpy, always moaning and blah blah...but, he was alright in the sense that he was the polar opposite to Percy. I liked Annabeth because she seemed real. She acted like a normal girl, which was good to have around. This book is good for a summer evening, with a quick pace and mainly likeable characters. (Oh yeah, and I've been to many of the places featured in this book on my trip...any guesses?)

On My Holiday I Read...The Reckoning by Jane Casey

The Reckoning by Jane Casey

Being a detective for the police, you can get involved in some pretty serious stuff. This is what happens to Maeve when she gets her new job. Somebody is going around, torturing in the most brutal way and eventually killing convicted paedophiles. Why would somebody do that? Is it such a coincidence when they discover that the murderers daughter has gone missing? But as all of the stories intertwine, and Maeve digs deeper and deeper...it's not just the convicted who aren't safe.

I don't usually read thriller/detective books, but I'm so glad I picked up this one. It was such a page turner, you were hanging on and on...with a nice pace, too. Maeve's personal life was in there - however, it didn't take over the story which was refreshing. There were a couple of love/hate relationships with the other people, such as her team.
I did have some problems with it though. The blurb on the back makes it seem as if this whole story is about one event. It's not. What is described to you, about the murderer killing paedophiles is not the main story - more like a subplot.
Otherwise, it was a good thriller, that kept you wanting to read on.

On My Holiday I Read...Airhead by Meg Cabot

Airhead by Meg Cabot

Em Watts-not so average seventeen year old. In the way that she is crazy about the environment, totally against Stark (the company responsible for killing America-literally (although nobody knows), a feminist, smart, never wears make up and can't give a fuss about her clothes. Oh yeah, and she is totally in love with her best friend Christopher. Who doesn't know anything about it.                                    Nikki Howard-not so average seventeen year old. In the way that she really isn't so fussed on the environment, the face of Stark, all into clothes and make up and partying, left school, declared herself as an emancipated minor before 16. Oh yeah, she is the worlds most famous supermodel. But that's all about to change.....

So how do you think Em felt waking up in Nikki's body? When Em might hate Nikki and everything her life includes-but she's going to be forced to live Nikki's life for her? And then Christopher...people reach into their past lives. They can't leave it all behind. But where does that leave Em and Christopher? Or should you say...Nikki and Christopher? I mean, considering that there is no person called Em Watts (legally) still alive?

I could go on forever talking about this. Sometimes, after reading a book once, thats it, blah blah put it on a shelf and forget about it. i've read this so many times, and each time is better and better, so pleasepleaseplease try it!

I'm Back!

If you want, you can guess where I went!

so yeah, i'm happy to be back!

Caddy Ever After by Hilary McKay

Indigo Casson has turned into Cupid with a twist. Rose just needs to keep a promise, but when nobody seems to understand how important it is-she might not manage. Saffy, well she doesn't think she can ever face Sarah again. How could you, when your best friend needed you and you ran away? All because of a stupid balloon. Caddy thinks she's found 'the one'. So she's getting married...but not to Michael. Leaving Rose heartbroken, she needs to find out how to stop them before it's too late.

I love this book. It's written like a journal, so you get to see each child's point of view: Rose, Indigo, Saffron, Caddy, then back to Rose. All of their lives have become so different, but they all intertwine and connect, joining up like the family they are. I love the relationship Caddy and Rose have, because I can relate to how Rose feels about Caddy so much-an sister much older than you, who rushes around going through life that makes you feel left behind. Then they come back and everything's alright again.
i love this series so much, you have to try it!

Permanent Rose by Hilary McKay

Permanent Rose. A clear, warm colour that glows with its own lively brightness, no matter how thinly spread. A colour that does not fade. Just like Permanent Rose Casson. (By the way, that is her real name). Tom has left for America-but why hasn't he called? And Caddy doesn't know if she can marry Michael. Saffy just wants to know who her real dad is. But when the truth comes out, was it really any better knowing? Indigo's becoming friends with enemies. Not good. No matter how friendly they act. Eve, she's still in the shed. But crying a whole lot more. Then comes Bill...well, he's found Samantha. And finally Rose.

Oh, this book. It started off a bit typical. But this was definitely the most emotional one so far. Here you really get a sense of everyone and how much their lives depend on each other. It's really hard to talk about it without spoiling, so sorry for being vague! And Hilary McKay, her writing is so good. She hints throughout every single book, so gently that by the time Rose knows, you have only just figured it out. You don't know before the characters. And I haven't really talked about Sarah, Saffy's best friend who is one of the family (not literally). She's so amazing and funny and amazing.
i thought i'd put in one of the emotional scenes, because i dont normally put in extracts of books.

"Where is Rose?" demanded Indigo, coming in at that moment.
"You had her!" said everyone, "Have you lost her again?"
Before Indigo could reply the telephone rang.
"You gave it away!" said Michael.

"You are being totally unreasonable!" snapped Caddy, banging the phone down."Saffron! There is disgusting chocolate goo all over this table!"
"Moan, moan, moan," said Saffron. "No wonder Michael dumped you! Mind that box!"
"Michael hasn't dumped me!" shouted Caddy, not minding the box which fell to the floor just as Eve came through the door carrying the carbonated swap (now cool).
"Everybody fine?" she enquired affectionately, seeming not to notice that Caddy and Saffron were angrily collecting letters and photographs from all over the room, and that the kitchen was in a state of chaos remarkable even by Casson standards. "I found this lovely cake outside, Sarah. You are so clever!"
"Eve," said Sarah, "it is hideous beyond belief."
"I always think that about mine too," agreed Eve cheerfully, "but then I ice then and they are somehow transformed...Oh."
All at once Eve realised what the papers were that lay strewn all about. She stooped and picked up a photograph. "Darling Linda," she said.
She was still looking at it when Rose came in, followed by David, who immediately trod first in a puddle of raw chocolate cake and next on a letter that had strayed across the room.
"Rose!" said Eve, kissing her. "And MarcusJoshPatrick...Which is it? I always forget."
"David," said David.
"David. Look where you are walking, David darling! Those things are very special."

"They are not," said Saffron loudly, over the sound of the telephone which had begun again. "They are not remotely special! David can walk over them as much as he likes. There was nothing in the box worth saving for so long! They made me feel like I was no one at all!"
"Oh Saffy!" exclaimed Eve. "After darling Daddy saved them so carefully for you!"
"HE IS NOT DARLING DADDY!" shouted Saffron. "Answer that telephone someone, for goodness' sake!"
David, feeling tremendously important, picked it up and said, "Hello, hello! This is David! To whom do you want to speak?"
"To Caddy of course," snapped Michael on the other end of the line. "Where is she?"
"She's here," said David. "Shaking her head. Saying no no."
Caddy rested her head on a sticky patch of table and moaned.
"Ask her what she has done with her ring!"
"What ring?" asked David.
Caddy grabbed the telephone from him and banged it down.
"What ring?" David asked again, goggling at her in surprise.
"My ring!" shouted Caddy, irritated beyond endurance. "My diamond and platinum engagement ring! That's what ring!"
"I've always liked the look of Michael," remarked Sarah to no one in particular. "I'll have him if you like, Caddy!"
"Oh no you won't!"
"Well, you don't want him! Saffy doesn't want him! Rose is still getting over that loser Tom..."
Rose picked up the plastic bowl of cake mixture (double quantities of everything, beaten egg white just stirred in) and dumped it upside down on Sarah's head.
Caddy ran upstairs.
"If anyone wants me," said Eve, "I shall be in my shed. I am tired of being a single parent and I'm not surprised Bill left."
Sarah wiped chocolate cake mixture out of her eyes and said, "Sorry, Rose."
"I'm not," said Rose.

"Come on," said Saffron to Sarah. "I'll help you wash your hair."
Indigo made tea and took it out to Eve.

Rose began to doodle in a patch of spilled flour. David groped in his mind for words that might do. He was dreadfully hot.
"It's the weather," he said, and was immediately surprised that the words he had wanted had somehow found themselves.
"Yes," agreed Rose.
"I wonder what will happen next."
"I don't know," said Rose.
