On My Holiday I Watched...Just Go With It

Just Go With It

Danny Macabee (Adam Sandler) has got it all figured out. He knows the perfect line to get women - 'I'm married, but my wife is a b****'. Which isn't true, because he's never been married, just uses a ring to pretend he is. Danny then meets gorgeous girl Palmer (Brooklyn Decker) and they get together. She then finds his wedding ring in his pocket the next morning, and leaves him saying that she doesn't want to ruin a marriage. But Danny lies again, saying that he's in the middle of getting a divorce. Sounds perfect, right? Until she wants to meet his wife. This is where his co-worker comes in, Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) and they get caught in a whirlwind of lies - which is pretty hard to get out of.

This was the type of movie you see once and don't go back. I was on the plane and bored, and it just kind of entertains you. It was good, a bit predictable, but the thing I didn't get, was how Jennifer Aniston was meant to play the 'not so pretty working mum' when she is obviously stunning. And Adam Sandler annoys me. Otherwise, it was fine.

On My Holiday I Read...Solar by Ian McEwen

Solar by Ian McEwen

Now, I have a confession to make. I didn't read this book. I only read the first chapter, and by then I had almost fainted from boredom. This was the first Ian McEwen book I had read, and it was so disappointing. The main character, Michael Beard is a pretentious, annoying, and whingey man who finds it shocking that his wife is having an affair, when he has been married four times before and had countless afairs. And he is a nobel prize winner.
That's as far as I got. I just couldn't stand to read it. And, I started it on a car journey so I was already bored and had nothing to do - but I couldn't bring myself to read this. It was just so disappointing.

That is why this book gets

0 STARS.

Sorry.

On My Holiday I Read...Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

Things have had a tendency to go wrong for Percy Jackson. I mean, accidentally exploding your math teacher can be a bit weird. Something strange has happened, at every school he's been to, always resulting in him getting expelled (but he blames this on his dyslexia and ADHD). But then he finds out about Camp Half-Blood, where the Greek Gods are real...and all the children there? Yep, one of their parents is a God. The other, mortal. And after only having been there a short while, Poseidon claims Percy as his son. He is then sent on a wild goose chase with his best friend Grover (who happens to be a satyr) and Annabeth, and experienced older girl who has been at camp all her life. Searching for Zeus's master bolt, the trio only have 10 days to find it...or it's an all out war of the God's.

This book is really fun to read, in the sense that I love Greek God's and all of the mythology, and this book is based around that. Percy, as a character, is a good narrator with a bit of an edge-y personality that you need when in a fight with Ares, god of war. I didn't love Grover...mainly because he was supposed to protect Percy, and it was more like Percy was protecting him. He was a bit wimpy, always moaning and blah blah...but, he was alright in the sense that he was the polar opposite to Percy. I liked Annabeth because she seemed real. She acted like a normal girl, which was good to have around. This book is good for a summer evening, with a quick pace and mainly likeable characters. (Oh yeah, and I've been to many of the places featured in this book on my trip...any guesses?)

On My Holiday I Read...The Reckoning by Jane Casey

The Reckoning by Jane Casey

Being a detective for the police, you can get involved in some pretty serious stuff. This is what happens to Maeve when she gets her new job. Somebody is going around, torturing in the most brutal way and eventually killing convicted paedophiles. Why would somebody do that? Is it such a coincidence when they discover that the murderers daughter has gone missing? But as all of the stories intertwine, and Maeve digs deeper and deeper...it's not just the convicted who aren't safe.

I don't usually read thriller/detective books, but I'm so glad I picked up this one. It was such a page turner, you were hanging on and on...with a nice pace, too. Maeve's personal life was in there - however, it didn't take over the story which was refreshing. There were a couple of love/hate relationships with the other people, such as her team.
I did have some problems with it though. The blurb on the back makes it seem as if this whole story is about one event. It's not. What is described to you, about the murderer killing paedophiles is not the main story - more like a subplot.
Otherwise, it was a good thriller, that kept you wanting to read on.
