Do The Right Thing by Jane Goldman

Ever wondered what you would do if you were locked in someone elses toilet? Or how to be the perfect guest? Almost every single situation you could come across are covered in this book, and it tells you exactly how to deal with them.

Now, I've read these books before and a lot of them are quite funny, and the authors have a sense of humor. But this one, sure it talked about everything you need to know-but it was so boring! I had to force myself to read it. Everything in here you could find out via friends (and that would be way more fun than reading this). If it was a person, they would be pretty and neat and tidy and have 0% personality. Sorry Jane.

Movie Review No. 2: The Bucket List

Edward Cole is a billionaire. Carter Chambers is a mechanic. So when they both become diagnosed with terminal cancer and they share the same hospital room, they become great friends, with an urge to live their last months alive doing the things they've always wanted. Together they make a 'Bucket List' of everything they want to do, from witness something magnificent to kiss the most beautiful girl in the world. Helping each other, they finally complete the list

Just to say, this was NOT my choice of movie. It's not really the type of thing i like. But Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman both played these parts really well; they got into their character, and it worked. However, the movie took a while to get going and I wished it spent a bit more time on the actual things they did on the list. The movie only really focused on a couple of things from the list that meant it was a bit slow. Anyway though, it was a nice movie to watch (but it was in the comedy section, and this is the least comedy movie, more like drama). So it gets an average rating from me.

HAIR!

So, I was just thinking the other day about hair. it's actually really weird. This thing that grows in some places, doesn't grow in others, and we spend so much time and effort and concentrate so much on it. Google definitions came up with this:

Hair

1. Any of the fine threadlike strands growing from the skin of humans, mammals, and some other animals.
2. A similar strand growing from the epidermis of a plant, or forming part of a living cell.

Doesn't sound too nice, does it? But, we are almost obsessive with our hair. I mean, the other day, I had my hair in a low loose bun, with a couple of wavy strands hanging out, with my fringe pinned back but kinda messy, you know? And I was really happy, because I'd got my favourite hairstyle which I've never been able to actually do. And I thought it looked really good, and I was really proud (you know that feeling. Proud of my hair, how cool am i.) But this morning I was determined to get it again, but i just couldn't do it! I put my hair in a ponytail, tried to do a bun...but it fell out, looked stupid, just didn't work. And I was really annoyed because my hair had been so good, but today it looked like a fail.

Then I was thinking about why does it matter? Being honest, nobody in the world cares about my hair apart from me. Which brings me to the conclusion that humans are seriously self conscious. We all want to appear nicer, cooler, prettier, confident-er than the other person. It's natural, but the thing is that kind of can be scary, is that theres no limit. We can go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about how we look! I know I can do it, constantly asking 'does my hair look alright? Is this spot noticeable?' to my friends. But, after a while-even if you can't stand your hair sometimes-you always learn to love it. Eventually, you'll realise that it doesn't matter any more. (I haven't reached that point yet, just to let you know).

But anyway, there you go!

32C, That's Me by Chris Higgins

Jess has everything a girl could possibly want-a perfect boyrfriend, great family, cool older sister, amazing best friend...when one day a phone call is all it takes to turn her life upside down. Then when her school puts on the unlucky play, Macbeth, and she gets the lead role-life starts to mirror art. When the truth starts coming out, her whole life starts to crumble and fall apart...can she keep it together?

I think that I expected too much of this book. First off, her boyfriend was supposed to be super-gorgeous-everyone-loves-him-perfect-and-amazing but he was called Muggs. Come on. (Well, that was his nickname-but his name throughout the book). I can't stand authors who give cute guys freaky names. Also, Ali (Jess's best friend) annoyed me and it annoyed me how Jess was such a pushover when it came to her. She forgave her so quickly, there wasn't enough drama. And it was, well....boring. Her Mum's story was OK, but you knew it was coming, and Chris Higgins ended the book to quickly. She got all the drama us readers had been waiting for and wrote it down on one page, like she couldn't be bothered to finish. And the ending could have been really really good-but it wasn't. She just focused on the pointless stuff too much. So, it was a drag to read...and I wouldn't bother with it again.

The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery

'Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.'

The narrator, tells us from the very start of how he never understood the grown-ups, about how they always wanted to talk about numbers and boring things. They never understood the thoughts of a child-they could never see the world in a different light to what they knew. So, then the narrator crashed his plane into the Sahara Desert. There he was awoken one day by a voice-the voice of a little man. This little man always smiled and laughed, and he told the man about his planet, and the grown-ups he had met. I love this book. The illustrations are so beautiful, and there are enough for you to imagine it all. This book also has so many quotes, it is my favourite 'quote' book (so I think I might include some). This book is equally for children and adults, I wish that I could speak French so that I could read the original, for I am sure it would sound so much more beautiful. It's so amazing and i've never read anything like it before, i'm not joking, everybody has to read this.

Quotes:
'The grown-ups are certainly very, very odd.'
'But he was in Turkish costume, so nobody would believe what he said. Grown-ups are like that...'
'To those who understand life, that would have given a much greater air of truth to my story. For I do not want any one to read my book carelessly. I have suffered too much grief already setting down these memories. Six years have already passed since my friend went away from me, with his sheep. If I try to describe him here, it is to make sure that I shall not forget him. To forget a friend is sad. Not every one has a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like the grown-ups who are no longer interested in anything but figures...'
'It is such a secret place, the land of tears.'
"It is also lonely among men", the snake said'
'Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world.'
'And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.'
"You are not at all like my rose," he said. "As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world."
And the roses were very much embarrassed.
"You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on. "One could not die for you. To be sure, and ordinary passer-by would think that my rose looked just like you-the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of all you other roses: because it is she that I have watered, because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed caterpillars (except the two or three that we have saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is
my rose.'
'One runs the risk of weeping a little, if one lets himself be tamed...'
'Here, then, is a great mystery. For you who also love the little prince, and for me, nothing in the universe can be the same if somewhere, we do not know where, a sheep that we never saw has-yes or no?-eaten a rose...
Look up at the sky. Ask yourselves: Is it yes or no? Has the sheep eaten the flower? And you will see how everything changes...
And no grown-up will ever understand that this is a matter of so much importance!'

And I love how he dedicated the book. On the fourth page, it says,

TO LEON WERTH
I ask the indulgence of the children who may read this book for dedicating it to a grown-up. I have a serious reason; he is the best friend I have in the world. I have another reason: this grown-up understand everything, even books about children. I have a third reason: he lives in France where he is hungry and cold. He needs cheering up. If all these reasons are not enough, I will dedicate this book to the child from whom this grown-up grow. All grown-ups were once children-although few of them remember it. And so I correct my dedication:
TO LEON WERTH
WHEN HE WAS A LITTLE BOY

Movie Review No. 1: I Love You, Man

When Peter Klaven proposed to his girlfriend, she said yes. She also couldn't wait to call all her family and friends-but when she asked who Peter wanted to call, he said that he didn't need to. Then when he overhead Zooey (his fiance) telling her friends that he was lonely, and friendless-he knew that he had to find a best man for his wedding. So, his brother set him up on 'man-dates' to try and find the ideal best man. But, when you have no friends, it can be hard to find them...especially in such a short time. But then he met Sydney, and it looks like he's found his best man. Soon though, the friendship starts to show its cracks..

This movie was easy to watch, and actually quite funny. I like any movie Paul Rudd's in, but I had only seen Jason Segel in How I Met Your Mother (which annoys me). But, he played the part well. It was a nice storyline, quite predictable and some not funny parts but thats what you get from a 15. The man dates were good though.

Window-shopping No.1: Peter Pan Collars

Topshop, £26
Topshop, £34
Here's my new little thing, because I'm trying to spice up my blog a bit (after all, it is the life of a bookworm - I have a life!!!) where I'm going to review what I've seen to be on trend right now in the UK.

So. Collars. Peter Pan collars are huge right now over in England!!! Topshop have a massive range of them, like most high street stores. What made them so huge? Is it the quirky-ness of them? The child-like feel to them?

Some massive (and I mean massive) collars were seen on the catwalk.
These 2 are by Anna Sui. If you are going for big, it looks best with hair pulled up to keep distraction away from your ginormous collar. Also, keep the accessories at a minimum so you don't look overly fussy. If you look at these, the contrast between the black and white make it very bold and pronounced. However, if you want to go for a more  normal size, here's some more catwalk ones. (By Anna Sui, of course).

ASOS, Petite Peter Pan Collar
Jersey Dress from £14-also in
white and black, black and
beige/brown
H! By Henry Holland, Mia Shell Top £12
What a bargain!

and some more...(not Anna Sui!!)
H! By Henry Holland Cherry Print
Bluse, £25-isn't this adorable???

Then we see the celebrities wearing it. Which ones looked the best? And which flopped? Let's take a look at the celebs, then..........................

Emma Watson-The pointy edges of the collar really work well with her new razor short haircut. The colour also compliments her shade of hair and skin tone, making it match really well. It's a sophisticated dress that looks lovely on her, so she gets 10/10 from me!

Rebecca Ferguson-Remember her from last years X-Factor? Well, she looks very cute in this blue dress. The lace collar and trimming looks so perfect with the deep blue velvet. Also, her hair being scraped back really shows off the detail of the collar-yay! Perhaps she could add some large pearl earrings to complete the look? But, altogether, 9/10.

Alexa Chung is seen as a fashion icon throughout Britain. The dress is certainly adorable with its floral print, and the grey sweater really shows off the collar-but it all feels a bit try hard. The dress, the sweater, the bag - it seems as if she isn't being original. And I don't love the bag either. Don't trend-setters be original? So Alexa only gets a 7/10 from me.

Fearne Cotton, you look amazing. I love this dress. I honestly do. The peachy shade matches her skin tone so well, and she totally got the whole 'girly-girl' look spot on. This is when peter pan collars look best-on a delicate dress. The shoes too are gorgeous, but I feel like the tattoo (however nice it may be) kind of spoils the outfit, and gets rid of some of that innocence. However, I still love it so Fearne gets 9/10 from me!

Natalie Portman goes for a more 'rebel' approach with her peter pan collar, by having gold studs on it. It actually looks pretty good. I know, I know, I've been saying about how it supposed to be sweet and cute, but this is a different approach and she's made it work. And the top part being sheer looks amazing. All together it works very well with chunky gold bracelets to compliment the collar, and those shoes are just gorgeous. Well done Natalie! 9/10.

Emma Roberts, to me, hasn't done the collar proud. 1: the dress looks creased *shockedface* (yes, I know, thats petty to complain about-but would you see Kate Middleton in a wrinkled dress? I thought not). 2: Those shoes look waaaaaaaaaay to high and too pointy (pointy shoes remind me of elves, OK?) 3: Her eye make up is too dark. Come on, Emma! You're wearing a cream/beige dress! Go easy on the make up! 4: The black belt is nice, but that black straight under the collar makes the dress look harsh. If that had been in a different colour, it could have looked better. If there were poofy short sleeves, she was wearing pumps and light make up, this would have really looked awesome. But, it just didn't work for me, so Miss Roberts only gets a 6.75/10 (yes, I'm fussy with my point 75. But you have to be precise!!!)

So, peter pan collars. Good? Or Bad? I think they are................awesome!!! And i can't wait till I buy my peter pan top/dress.

(They're like stars, but bags with the name of the thing I'm reviewing on. Cool much.)

Alone on a Wide Wide Sea by Michael Morpurgo

Arthur Hobhouse has lived such an amazing life. From being transported to Australia as an orphan to start a new life, leaving behind his sister Kitty and being given a key-the only thing he has to prove that she was real, to being treated like a slave at Coopers Station and finding a 'brother', and living at Auntie Meg's house with the other animals she took in, even joining the navy, then falling in love when it just seemed easier to end it all. But there is a constant theme of the sea, which he loved so much and spent all his life with. So, when Arthur knows that his time is coming near, he and his daughter Allie write down his life story. Then we turn to Allie, and see her story. Of how she sailed across the world in her fathers memory, and met her albatross. But, she does it most importantly, to find Kitty, prove that she was real, and discover what that key even did.

Alone on a Wide Wide Sea is one of Michael Morpurgo's disappointing books. I don't like Michael Morpurgo books. No matter how good they start off, they always end in sadness. Especially in this. It just felt like there were unnecessary deaths that made me want to stop reading it. I hate when the authors kill off characters just for the sake of it, and I thought that Morpurgo did that a lot in this book. He does that in all his books though, which is why I don't really enjoy reading them. It was an OK plot, kinda cliche, and could be good by any other author, but I just couldn't enjoy it. And it was a hard book to read, I had to force myself to re-read it. And I think I might have given it away, just because I can't stand it. So, this book, I definitely would not read again.
